On Saturday, June 9th, WFYI and PBS hosted Kids in the Park in Historic Military Park.

This White River State Park event brought a little bit of everything to WRSP, from Curious George and Clifford to live music, to food and ice cream from all over central Indiana.

The festival gave kids and their parents a chance to break away from the all-too-frequent summer days of boredom and see their favorite animated characters come to life in White River State Park.

The White River State Park interns also got in on the fun, giving away prizes throughout the day from our attractions to families that joined our email list.

WINDY was a hit with the kids, as they got the chance to get behind the (stationary) wheel and “drive” the park’s electric car. No doubt this experience was slightly different from driving the fire truck parked nearby, but fun was had by all!

Between the ukulele-playing singers and famous mascots posing for pictures, Kids in the Park parents could get in on the fun too, with local vendors selling products from the Hoosier state. The safe environment of Military Park lent itself to a children’s event, and parents were visibly at ease with the freedom their kids enjoyed.

Families looking for ways to get out of the house this summer shouldn’t forget that Historic Military Park can be used any day for free! With its quick access to the Canal and other White River State Park attractions, including the Indiana State Museum and Eiteljorg, Military Park is one of many ways to get active in downtown Indianapolis. It is also only a five minute walk to the other green spaces within White River State Park, including the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn and Celebration Plaza and Amphitheater.
