White River State Park Celebrates MLK, Jr. Day with FREE Admissions on January 20th!

All Park Attractions* will open for FREE in exchange of non-perishable food donations to benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana

Also FREE health screenings offered by Eskenazi Health

INDIANAPOLIS – For the 14th year in a row, visitors to White River State Park Attractions will receive FREE admission and FREE parking on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20th, with non-perishable and/or canned food donations (require at least one can/donation per person AND per Attraction).  The Park’s partnership with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has resulted in more than 80 tons of non-perishable, canned food donations over the years from this one-day, annual event.

* Special activities will take place all throughout the day at the six (6) major Attractions that make up White River State Park: Eiteljorg Museum, IMAX® Theater, Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA® Hall of Champions, and Victory Field.

Returning this year:  FREE health screenings taking place indoors at Victory Field, courtesy of Eskenazi Health.  From 1o am to 1:30 pm, health care professionals from Eskenazi Health will offer health assessments and general information about Eskenazi Health services.  Nurses will be available to discuss the importance of primary and preventive care.  Those who come with a can of food and participate in the health screenings will each receive two (2) complimentary tickets to Opening Night at Victory Field (scheduled for April 10th), courtesy of the Indianapolis Indians.

  • Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens:  For the second-straight year, one (1) lucky Zoo guest will win a Dolphin Art Adventure as part of the Kubota Can Cram.  Throughout the day, visitors will stuff donated canned goods inside one of the Zoo’s signature service vehicles and the person who comes closest to guessing the total number of cans will win!  Plus, visitors can see the many animals that enjoy the cooler winter weather, including tigers, polar bear, red panda, walrus, sea lions, and more!  Dolphin Adventure Shows at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm are always a favorite activity (first-come first-served and limited seating), and guests can also enjoy several indoor exhibits, including Oceans, Dolphin Pavilion, and Hilbert Conservatory.

  • IMAX® Theater:  Experience one of the thrilling IMAX® standard engagement action films where Journey to the South Pacific 3D will be shown for FREE until 5 p.m.  This family-friendly documentary narrated by Academy Award®-winning actress Cate Blanchett follows a young island boy named Jawi on a quest around tropical West Papua.  Escape our arctic air for a dazzling tropical paradise that is home to more than 2,000 species of sea life – the most diverse marine ecosystem on Earth.  FREE tickets are available beginning at 10 a.m. (at the Box Office) on a first-come, first-served basis.  Screenings are at 10:15 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 am, 2 pm, 3:15 pm, and 4:45 pm.

  • NCAA® Hall of Champions:  Learn more about NCAA® Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in a new exhibit.  Featured in the display are many well-known former student-athletes, coaches, and traditions that showcase the athletic and academic successes of HBCUs.  Kids of all ages can participate in fitness clinics with former and current NCAA® student-athletes from 11 am to 3 pm.  There will also be opportunities to win official NCAA® merchandise throughout the day.

  • Victory Field (Indianapolis Indians Baseball):  From 10 am to 1:30 pm, health care professionals from Eskenazi Health will offer FREE health screenings and general information about Eskenazi Health services.  Screenings will be on the 3rd floor (entrance through Administrative Office doors near the parking lot).  Nurses will also be available to discuss the importance of primary and preventive care.  Health screening participants who bring a can of food will each receive two (2) free tickets to Opening Day at Victory Field (scheduled for April 10th).   Plus, Rowdie, the Indianapolis Indians mascot will stop by for autographs.

The Park is also offering complimentary parking on MLK, Jr. Day.  Visitors may park in the Underground Garage located off West Washington Street in front of and between the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum in the Park, in the surface parking lots at the Indianapolis Zoo and Victory Field, and in White River State Park’s Surface South Lot across from Victory Field (via Schumacher Way) next to the White River State Park Visitor’s Center.  Parking is not guaranteed and is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please plan your travel accordingly.

About Gleaners Food Bank
